Spring Wrap Up!

What a spring it was! We had some amazing hunts and fishing trips. It started back in March with some combo fishing/Turkey trips. Opener of turkey season I got to hunt with my good friend and watch him arrow a nice Jake in Placer County. The highlight was hunting turkeys in 25 degree weather with snow on the ground in Northeastern California. We located a group of 5 toms and 6 hens. One 35 yard shot from Emily and she had a gorgeous Merriam Tom!

I didn't get my chance until a few weeks later when I called in a nice Jake to 30 yards.

The next trips were targeted for Fish. Emily and I have a small john boat that we use the most. It is perfect for what we do and we were able to land numerous nice trout and kokanee. Our big acquisition for the boat this year was a new Fish Finder. The Hawkeye FishTax 1C. We were so impressed with it that I completed a video review on the product. Check it out below:

We also had some time to fit in a coast trip to chase Rio Grande Turkeys and pigs. Well both cooperated nicely and we came home with two hogs and two nice toms!

The end of the spring was rounded out with some more fishing on a Wilderness Unlimited hunting and fishing club property (www.wildernessunlimited.com), Lake Margaret. What a time! Lots of nice trout and great company! Now onto Big Game Season!

Emily's Nevada Mule Deer Hunt

I was lucky enough to draw a mule deer tag for Nevada this year. I was thrilled to have the tag as this would be my first true mule deer hunt. My parents, Dan and I headed out to the desert and set up camp on Saturday before the season started a spent the weekend scouting before the season opened on Monday.

We spent the next 5 days covering lots of country on foot and in the truck checking out new areas to determine where we wanted to focus our efforts.  We spent countless hours glassing hillsides, canyons, and open plateaus. We saw lots of beautiful country and animals during that time.

All of this effort paid off on day 5 when we spotted a nice buck at first light about a mile and a half from where we were glassing. My parents stayed at a high spot where they could keep an eye on the buck while Dan and I made the sneak. There was another group of 4 bucks on the same hillside as the one we were after, we had to move slow down a long drainage so we didn't spook them. The group of bucks finally fed up and over a saddle, we were now in the clear to move in closer to the buck we were after. During the sneak the buck had bedded down near a rocky point. Dan and I were able to sneak around behind the buck while he was still bedded and hide in some rocks about 300 yards behind him. The buck got up and fed over the hill toward us about 20 min after we got into position. After watching him feed for a short time I decided to take the shot and he went straight down! A 318 yard shot using a 300 Remington Ultra Mag topped with an Alpen Apex 4-16X44 scope. The plan worked out perfect and I couldn't believe it had all come together. My furthest shot at my biggest buck! I couldn't be happier.

Geared up and ready to go! The huntingmoon is here!

In just a few more days we will be boarding an airline bound for Kodiak Island to start our first Alaska adventure together. Our schedule is packed but we cannot wait.... August 22nd we fly out of Reno and arrive in Kodiak around 8am on the 23rd. We then will go shopping for some last minute supplies and hop on a Bush Hawk floatplan with Kingfisher Air for our drop off destination, Grants Lagoon on the 24th. Then its time to set up camp and spend the next 8 days hunting and fishing in paradise. Sitka Blacktail deer is our target and is the second to the last species (4 of 5) to check off the list to complete the deer slam together.

From there we will pick up a RV in Anchorage and do the "sightseeing" potion of our "huntingmoon" through September 16th. We are all packed and ready to go. Stay tuned for updates...
